by The Roots. The Road from Memphis refers not only to Booker T’s journey but to the

John Coltrane – Blue Train (1957)
Blue Train is one of those ineffable sound recordings that actually seems to capture
a moment of perfect artistry. Coltrane was in the midst of a Prestige recording contract
but was able to honor a previous commitment to Blue Note and release this one album.
With four Coltrane originals, including the haunting theme of the title track,
and one standard, this recording showed Coltrane was becoming the complete
package: player, composer,and bandleader.

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi – Rome [2011]
Some five years in the making, the conception of Rome actually dates back even further,
to the 2004 meeting of Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse and Italian composer/arranger
Daniele Luppi. Burton was emerging from the aftermath of the media storm around his
Grey Album and beginning work on Gorillaz now multi-platinum and Grammy
winning Demon Days. Luppi was amassing acclaim for his album An Italian Story,
which paid tribute to the cinematic sounds that shaped his childhood, while writing
music for the screen and soon thereafter contributing arrangements to Burton projects
including Gnarls Barkley, Dark Night of the Soul and Broken Bells.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Heritage EP 2010
Chicago’s Hypnotic Brass Ensemble recorded these five scorching reworks of tracks by
Fela Kuti, Madlib, Jay-Z, Art Of Noise, Outkast and MF Doom. Mos Def was tasked
with scoring the set, which is played out by the band in super tight style.
I can almost guarantee you’ve never heard ‘Moments In Love’ quite like this before
and even if you can’t tell what the original is, these are just killer big band funk cuts
that’ll you’ll massively peak off. One for the DJs, the dancers and the collectors!
